2020 Society of Garden Designers Awards

Winner of the Medium Residential Garden Award for a country garden in the South Downs (see portfolio page ‘Isolated Idyll’)

What the judges said: “A relaxed and timeless design that incorporates the landscape beautifully with a limited colour palette that harmonises with the local vernacular and spaces that flow, creating wonderful journeys throughout the garden. An excellent resolution to a difficult site.” The garden also won the People’s Choice Award.

2017 Society of Garden Designers Awards

Winner of the Large Residential Garden Award for a country garden in the Surrey Hills (see portfolio page ‘Surrey Serene‘).

What the judges said: “A beautifully planned garden in a lovely setting creating romance and a sense of place.  The use of the meadows is key to linking it to the landscape and is exactly what a garden of this nature requires.  A seamless and creative design demonstrating the skill of the designers.  An extremely professional plan with good attention to detail allowing for easy interpretation”.

2017 British Association of Landscape Industries Awards

Principal Award Winner of the Domestic Garden Construction over £250K with contractors Outdoor Creations. (see portfolio page ‘Stylishly Surrey‘).

What the judges said: “Comprising the complete refurbishment of an extensive existing garden, this fantastic scheme has been executed with care, passion and thought.  The changes in levels are seamless, the planting exceptional and the detailing throughout is beautiful… and the result is a garden where every aspect blends perfectly.  This is, quite simply, a lovely scheme that reflects the excellent client/contractor relationship.”

2014 Society of Garden Designers Awards

What the judges said: “This scheme achieves one of the most difficult goals in garden design; it really feels as if it has been in situ for several decades. This is a transformational project. Devised as a journey through spaces, it feels composed and perfectly linked. The garden has a period ambiance, exhibiting confidence of scale. It is a well executed, integrated design with sharp edges softened by sophisticated planting.”

Winner of the International Garden Award for a country garden on the Channel Island of Guernsey (see portfolio page ‘Guernsey Garden’).

What the judges said “An amazing garden with intense displays of colour and form. Vistas are resolved and connected. This is a very natural design, specific to the site, which establishes a calm, beautiful and textural atmosphere”.

What the judges said: “The transformation of this wide-ranging, impressive garden is astonishing. The design showed great spacial sequences throughout and Ian was very sensitive to the surrounding. His design really embraced the extended landscape and rooted the house in the garden. The garden is alive with textures, colour and form, on all surfaces that defined space. Levels are cleverly used, both formally and informally, to maximise the sequence of unfolding views and to blend the varying scales together.”

Comfortable within an outstanding rural landscape yet encompassing some modern planting concepts.”

Winner of the Best Garden by a Garden Designer and Garden of the Year awards for a large country garden in Hampshire (see portfolio page ‘Views and Vistas’).

2005 British Association of Landscape Industries Awards

Winner of the Domestic Garden Scheme over £100K with contractors The Outdoor Room (see portfolio page ‘Views and Vistas’).

What the judges said: “It is hard to comprehend that only a few months ago this extensive garden was a field.  The design concept is bold and imaginative creating a whole host of interesting features and vistas.  It is very apparent that the planning and execution of the work has been undertaken with great skill.  A great deal of environmental planting complements this innovative scheme.”

2005 British Association of Landscape Industries Awards

Winner of the Domestic Garden Scheme under £50K with contractors The Outdoor Room (see portfolio page ‘Form and Foliage’).

What the judges said: “Designed by Acres Wild and implemented in two phases, good design and materials are used throughout.  A serpentine retaining wall splits the upper site from the lower which is at risk from during flooding.  A limited planting palette has been used to a very good effect creating a variety of textures and shady/sunny places.  The overall effect is stunning and the client is thrilled.”

2004 Design and Decoration Awards

Winner of the Garden Design Award for a courtyard garden in central London (see portfolio page ‘City Calm’).

What the judges said: “The garden is a perfect complement to the interior of the house, offering calm, relaxed and comfortable space, with a genuine continuity between architecture and landscape. It is a place to live comfortably in, to entertain in and to enjoy.

2005 Design and Decoration Awards

Winner of the Garden Design Award for a country garden in West Sussex (see portfolio page ‘Country Contemporary’).

What the judges said: “Intelligent planting and use of shrubs and trees creates four distinctive areas of the garden which are perfect for the barn and sit well in the existing countryside. A glorious example of freedom, space and pleasure resulted in this win for Acres Wild. ”

Other Awards

Other awards include the 1999 BALI Award (British Association of Landscape Industries) with contractors Landmark (see portfolio page ‘Cool & Composed‘), the first Hampton Court Flower Show (1990) Trophy for Garden Design, a Business and Industry Commitment to the Environment Award and a Phoenix Award for Memorial Garden Design.
